In Finder open the Go menu and select the Connect to Server… option
In the Server Address field, enter the location: smb://uni.ad.sunderland.ac.uk/Data/<share_name> where share_name is the name of the departmental or team share (e.g. share_mars):
Click the Connect Button and then enter your University user name and password and then click Connect.
