Migrate your student Google files to Office 365 OneDrive

Home / Help and Advice / Office 365 / Connect / Students / Migrate your Google files to Office 365 OneDrive

If you wish to keep any files in your existing university Google account you will be required to move these to your university Office 365 account before the 31 December 2020.

As part of your new Office 365 account, you have an individual OneDrive space to store your university work.

You may want to move the files from your old Google Drive to your new OneDrive. Files in your OneDrive will be more easily accessible from your new Office 365 email and from other Office 365 apps, such as Teams.

Moving Files

The easiest way to move your files is using ‘Google Takeout’

Browse to https://takeout.google.com/ and log in using your old Google account – either UserID@student.sunderland.ac.uk  or UserID@research.sunderland.ac.uk e.g. ab0abc@student.sunderland.ac.uk

Once you have signed in, click "Deselect All".

Scroll down and tick the box next to Drive. You may also want to tick the box next to Google Photos if you have stored images there.

You can check the options by clicking "Multiple formats", "Advanced settings" and "All Drive data included’". The automatic choices will be OK for most people.

Scroll to the bottom and click Next step

Under Delivery Method, choose Send download link via email.

Leave the Frequency set to Export once. Leave the File type & size set to .zip and 2GB unless you have a specific reason not to. Then click "Create export".

Google will send you an email to your university Office 365 email account with your download links once they are ready.

Note: Do not choose Add to OneDrive as the Delivery Method; this is for exporting to personal OneDrives, not to University of Sunderland OneDrives.

Once you have downloaded the .zip files to your computer you can then extract the .zip file contents to view all your Google files and then begin to move your files into your OneDrive, you can follow the same concept from this guide to setup your OneDrive and move your files into your OneDrive https://ts.sunderland.ac.uk/help-and-advice/office-365/connect/students/onedrive-data-migration-guide/
