Moving Data from one OneDrive to another

You may have been storing data in the OneDrive linked to your ‘old’ Office 365 account. If you would like to keep this data, you must make sure you have a copy of it before we close your old account completely. You must do this by 18th July 2020.

We suggest that you move the data to the OneDrive linked to your ‘new’ Office 365 account.

Getting files off your old OneDrive

The easiest way to get the files off your old OneDrive is to install and configure the OneDrive app on your computer.

If you do not already have OneDrive installed:

Go here to download it: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-gb/download/

If you have it installed but have not yet configured it for your old account:

Run the OneDrive application. It will show you a screen like this:

Note that if you already have OneDrive configured for a different, non-University of Sunderland account, then you won’t see this screen. If that is the case, follow the ‘Accessing my new OneDrive’ instructions below twice – first to add the old account, then to add the new account.

Type in the address of your old Office 365 account. Remember that if you are doing this after 19th June 2020 then the address will have changed and will now end @researchsunderlandacuk.onmicrosoft.com or @studentsunderlandacuk.onmicrosoft.com

Once the account has been added successfully, you will see a screen like this:

As you click ‘Next’ it will show you some useful hints and tips. Finally, click ‘Open my OneDrive folder’ to view the files. If you have any files in your OneDrive they should have already starting appearing

Adding your new OneDrive

To add an extra OneDrive onto a computer that already has one configured, you need to click on the ‘cloud’ OneDrive icon in your task bar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). You may need to click the small arrow to get the extra icons to appear.

A new window will appear. Click ‘More’ and then ‘Settings’ (Windows) or ‘Preferences’ (Mac)

Go to the ‘Account’ tab and click ‘Add an account’

Follow the prompts to add your new account.

Remember that your new Office 365 account sign-in address will be your University UserID appended  ‘@student.sunderland.ac.uk’ even if you also have an ‘@research.sunderland.ac.uk’ email address i.e. ab0abc@student.sunderland.ac.uk

Your password is the same as your Google/Canvas password.

At the end of the process click ‘Open my OneDrive folder’ to open your new OneDrive folder on your computer.

Moving files to your new OneDrive

To move files from your old OneDrive to your new OneDrive, simply copy and paste them between the two OneDrive folders on your PC.

When you do this, you will also create a second copy of each file on your computer – if you have a lot of files, you may run out of space!

If this happens, move the files in batches – copy the first batch across, delete them from the old OneDrive, then move the next batch.
